What types of devices do you place during penile implant surgery?

Penile implants help when you have Peyronie’s disease or another illness that disrupts sexual function. Dr. Amend places one of two types of implant:

Inflatable implants

Inflatable implants consist of a few pieces. Dr. Amend surgically places inflatable cylinders inside your penis. These implants include a reservoir that holds fluid. 

Depending on the type of implant, this reservoir is connected to the cylinders or housed separately in your abdominal wall or scrotum. 

To activate an inflatable implant, you use a tiny pump to move fluid from the reservoir to the cylinders. Dr. Amend conceals the pump in your scrotum. 

As the cylinders fill up, your penis becomes erect. The pump features a release valve that sends the fluid back to the reservoir and releases the erection. 

Rod implants

Dr. Amend also offers rod implants. These are semi-rigid devices that are concealed within the shaft of your penis. You push the rods away from your body when you want to simulate an erection. To release the erection, return them to their original position.

How long does it take to recover from penile implant surgery?

In the first 48-72 hours after surgery, you’ll experience some pain. Control it with prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Expect to have mild soreness for several weeks. You’ll be encouraged to start inflating and deflating inflatable penile implants about 3-6 weeks after placement. This helps you get used to using them and stretches the tissue in the area. 

The surgery is invasive, but most men with erectile dysfunction (ED) are especially satisfied with the results. They go on to enjoy a satisfying sex life.
